HIT THE SHELF

How are books shelved and in which contexts can this place them? With sensitivity to such questions, exhibiting artists, in collaboration with the GfZK-Library, form thematic shelf-exhibitions. With playful associations these mixed media collages parallel the artists’ respective contributions to the exhibition and, as such, allow explorations into both the artists’ varying themes and the artistic approach used to negotiate them.

Libraries provide access to knowledge, which is organised in classification systems. HIT THE SHELF provides a way for publications to form different constellations to those of a system of fixed categories. The overall knowledge of the library is thereby set in motion; opening up a dynamic of complex relationships between the publications and thereby the possibilities for new perspectives.

HIT THE SHELF can be seen during the GfZK-Library opening times and on request.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9 am – 5 pm
Thursdays and Fridays 9 am – 2 pm

The project series is framed within the new conception of the GfZK Library. The title HIT THE SHELF recalls the phrasing of frantic, last minute, university students. Out of its normal context, and written in block capitals, the aggressive physicality of the phrase becomes clearer and so bringing more dynamic perspectives into a play.
